Water coming through wall when it rains

There's water coming through wall when it rains. Is this likely to be a roof issue or something else?

"Water coming through an internal wall during rain can be caused by a few different issues. It isn’t always the roof itself — common causes include leaking or overflowing gutters, damaged roof tiles or flashing, or defects in the external wall such as pointing, render, or seals around windows.
The best way to identify the exact cause is to carry out an external inspection, starting with the gutters and roofline, as water can travel before showing inside"

"without further inspection, you wouldn’t be able to tell you would need to inspect the roof and see if there’s any issues or inspect sealant or motor work and the windows are on the brickwork"

"That depends on where on the wall the water is coming through — but very often, yes, it can be roof-related, though not alway
If you want, describe the exact location (or upload a photo), and I’ll tell you with high confidence what the cause is and what to fix first."

"Water coming through an internal wall when it rains is often linked to an external defect, and the roof is a common cause — but it isn’t the only possibility.

Typical causes include:
• Damaged or slipped roof tiles/slates
• Failed flashing around chimneys or roof junctions
• Blocked or leaking gutters/downpipes overflowing onto the wall
• Cracked render or brickwork allowing water to penetrate
• Defective cavity trays or wall ties in cavity walls

Water can travel before it appears internally, so the source isn’t always directly above the damp patch.

The best approach is a full external inspection, starting with the roof, flashing, and guttering, then working down the walls. At Quality Roofing and Guttering Ltd, we regularly trace and repair rain-related leaks across London and can identify whether the issue is roof-related or coming from the walls themselves.

The key is to investigate early, as ongoing water ingress can lead to internal damage and mould if left untreated."

"It could be the roof, but water coming through the wall is more often caused by:
Failed pointing, cracks in the wall, or water running down from blocked gutters/flashings, not always the roof covering itself"

"You could have rasing damp witch can cause you lots of problems or simply just a crack in wall, needs repointing."

"Hi there,
Usually the highest chances are for that to be a roof issue, depending on the condition of the felt and tiles but before have a look at the bricks in the area where the leak is coming through as it could need pointing

Kind regards, Bler"
