How to board a loft without loft legs

Question

I want to add some storage boards in the loft but I've heard you shouldn't just lay boards flat on the joists as it compresses the insulation?

Correct, you can get extension legs from most diy stores or put some additional timber to make the height but do not overload the existing structure

Hi there, 
Yes that true you shouldn't put board directly  on wool insulation, however if you create the support from solid timber 3" x 2" and keep 2" gap above the insulation will be ok. That is one  method and the other you can install PIR board between the ceiling joints with out any gap and on top you can install again PIR insulation board with integral 8mm OSB board and fix directly to the ceiling joints.
When you decided to putting insulation on the attic make sure the cable electric is lay directly above the insulation in accessible way to maintain.

Correct, however you also can board on joists with only 100mm of insulation and insulate on the roof side of your loft using multi foil

We add top off joist timber 2/2 then put floor broad

We use solid wood batten to raise boards to the required depth so insulation doesn’t get compressed.

Make sure cables r sunk below board level by either taking minimum check out joists or drilling a hole and feeding through cables or piping before screwing down chipboard flooring
