How to board a loft without loft legs

I want to add some storage boards in the loft but I've heard you shouldn't just lay boards flat on the joists as it compresses the insulation?

"We use solid wood batten to raise boards to the required depth so insulation doesn’t get compressed.
Thankyou"

"Make sure cables r sunk below board level by either taking minimum check out joists or drilling a hole and feeding through cables or piping before screwing down chipboard flooring"
