  • Do log burning fires need a chimney liner inserted?

Hello, I have a log burner fire installed in my home with a plate fitted above it also. When the fire is burning, the chimney breast does get very hot and there are some occasional crackling noises. Due to this I am considering a chimney liner to try help resolve this. Does my log burning fire need a chimney flue liner and will it make much difference to the heat on the chimney breast? Is my fire still safe to use in the meantime?

What should I do about a blocked sink drainpipe?

Hi all Today I had a blockage in my sink’s drain pipe – I decided to unblock it using some drain unblocker liquid, thinking the block may just be some leftovers that had gotten stuck somehow. Unfortunately, this hasn’t helped and now I have a blocked drain pipe with unblocking liquid in there too. Is there any way I could try and fix this myself or would I be best to ask a plumber to take a look?

    Water streaming onto conservatory

There is water streaming onto the conservatory from a far plastic pipe (near guttering) on the roof outside at the back. It's a semi-detached house. Is there any reason this could be an issue with my home, or is it a problem for the neighbours?

Can I move the water cylinder to the attic?

I own a top floor apartment with an attic. All electric with a large cold-over-hot water cylinder and pump in the hotpress. I need to move the water cylinder and pump, in order to convert the hotpress into a soundproof booth. We'd like a new cylinder too, since the one we have only provides enough hot water for 1/3 of a bathful. It is probably very unwise to mount a cylinder on the joists, as they are not thick enough. There are blockwork walls at both ends of the attic. Could a horizontal cylinder be mounted on a blockwork wall safely, if the right fixings and brackets are drilled far enough in?

Is a water meter best for family of 4?

I’ve heard mixed reviews about water meters vs flat rate tariffs. We obviously don’t waste water but between 4 of us we use a fair amount each day. Is it cheaper to get a water meter installed?

    Bath Sealant Problems

I'm having constant issues with the sealant around my bath. When I bought the house, it had not been sealed, the tiles had been grouted against the bath. I took this out, cleaned and sealed. But the sealant keeps failing, going mouldy and we've previously had leaks in to the room below, it also seems to leak through the shower screen as well. The tiles sit just over the bath at the tap end, where the problem is, and butt to the tiles at the other. I need to remove the sealant again for the 4th time but need to know what I'm doing wrong. I am removing all sealant, rubbing down with white spirit and weighted the bath last time to account for movement. Only a little water is getting behind, but the plasterboard is slightly damp so it needs sorting properly. Thanks
