Mains water stop

I just wonder when we change interior stop tap in property, shall we inform to water supply because we are using mains stop outside the road to stop water supply to house or is it Ok to carried out work without informing water supply authority? And also how do we find out if the mains stop valve supply water to only your property or your neighbours too?

"Hi.

YOU: I just wonder when we change interior stop tap in property, shall we inform to water supply because we are using mains stop outside the road to stop water supply to house or is it Ok to carried out work without informing water supply authority?

ME: You don't need to inform your water provider to stop your external service valve.

This service valve is there to serve and protect your property by manually turning it off when you need it.

You only need to inform your water provider if you are not able to turn this valve off, as the valve could be too old or handle broken.

You: And also, how do we find out if the mains stop valve supply water to only your property or your neighbours too?

Generally speaking, this valve should serve one property.

I would advise you to let your neighbours know that you are intended to turn the valve off for a short period while you are replacing your internal stop tap.

I hope that will help.

Constantin"

"You can use the outside stop valve without permission, although this tends to be used in an emergency or if the valve in the house is not working.
This valve may be brass and need several turns to switch off like a tap, or it may be plastic and only need a quarter turn. Some might use a key which can sometimes be located in the hole next to the valve. It’s important to be careful with these valves and not to force or overtighten which switching on or off.
If this valve is located on a public walkway you may need to place a notice or cone over it to avoid a trip hazard.
The best way to tell if it also services a neighbour’s property is to communicate with them. These valves can sometimes have meters on them. Obviously the reading on this meter should not change if you have turned it off."

"No the tap outside should only be for your use but I would recommend that you instal an internal stop valve incase you have leak at any time you can go straight to it to stop the water damage faster than running around in the dark outside and your insurance company can be awkward if you can not control your water in the house"

"You can find this out by calling your planning department . Or simply ask the neighbours and test it . After that it will need carefully digging out . All the lay work can be done by anyone - ie the new pipe is layed on shale at least 600mm deep - the route to be taken sensibly and covered well . The connection at roadside must be done by a registered plumber or water authority provider . There is a fee .
Total costs around £1700 Upto £3500 . Driveway repair extra ."

"If the water drain is on your property it will only service yours and no need to let water board know"

"Hi there,
You do not need to inform the water authority, certainly in most circumstances.
This would depend on whether you turn neighbour's supply off and for how long. To check your not cutting a neighbour's supply. Check the street outside your house. If there is one stop tap outside each house that's clear. If only one at the corner or end of a run of house's, most likely cuts of a few. If your house looks like it's in the grounds of your closest neighbour. It would likely a shared mains. If all else fails ask one of your neighbours, especially if they have lived on your street a long time, they would likely know.

"No you don't have to inform the waterboard as anything from the stop tap to your property is owned by you."
