Should the garage roof be insulated?

What is standard for an attached or detached garage? I have done some of my own research on related building regulations, but more confused than when I started…

"If it’s been used day to day then I would say get it insulated, however it is just been used as. General garage then I wouldn’t say insulate it as it’s not too significant and would cost more money"

"If the garage roof is only used for storage i.e car, tools, boxes etc then insulation is an unnecessary add on. Insulation is mainly used for garage conversions."

"It depends on what is going in the garage as for example if you had really expensive cars or motorcycle s you would want and insulated garage with temperature control"

"Yes if in use for dry storage or convert living space"

"Short answer: yes, in most cases a garage roof should be insulated — but it depends on how the garage is used.

🏠 When you should insulate it

If your garage is:
• Attached to your house
• Used as a workshop, gym, or storage for things you don’t want freezing
• Being converted (or might be later)

👉 Insulating the roof helps:
• Keep heat in during winter ❄️
• Stop it overheating in summer ☀️
• Reduce condensation (big one in UK garages)
• Lower energy bills if it’s attached to the house

❌ When it’s less important

If it’s:
• A detached garage
• Only used for parking a car or basic storage

👉 Then insulation is more optional — but still useful for condensation control."

"An attached garage is connected to your home and must meet stricter fire and ventilation regulations. A detached garage is separate, so rules are more flexible, but both must still meet UK building regulations for structure and safety."

"Generally if the garage is used as a space for living or work space then it would be good practice to insulate although not necessary"
