Is my garage roof asbestos?

What are the signs that a garage roof contains asbestos? If it does contain asbestos, will I have to hire a specialist to remove it or can any roofer handle the garage roof replacement?

"Corrugated sheets (wavy profile)
• Grey / dull cement look, not shiny
• Often has lichen or moss on top
• Installed before 2000 (very common 1950s–1980s)
• Underside looks fibrous or grainy, not smooth
. No manufacturer label saying “asbestos-free”"

"The best way to find out if your garage roof is asbestos is to have a sample sent for testing.
If it comes back as a positive test you will need an asbestos registered company that can remove it safely with all the correct PPE"

"If it has a similar look and texture to cement I would automatically assume asbestos before carrying out any work, definitely get it professionally tested beforehand.

As to having work carried out, depending on the type of asbestos it is will depend on who can work with it, and the only way to find that info out is to have it tested.

Once tested and confirmed I'd look for roofers who have had training to deal with asbestos as knowledge and correct PPE is essential for the work to be carried out safely.

Hope this helps,"

"• Signs: Older corrugated cement sheets (1950–90s), grey/white, weathered, mossy, etc.
• Removal: If it’s asbestos cement, many experienced roofers can handle it, but they must follow safety rules and proper disposal. Higher-risk asbestos requires licensed specialists.
• Best practice: Get it tested first, then choose a roofer or specialist based on results."

"The colour is the most giveaway sign without testing it. If it is the grey Corrugated garage roofs. It is highly likely to be asbestos. And no not just any roofer can take it away as it is considerably dangerous and a major health hazard, make sure anyone who looks at it/does the job is fully qualified first"

"Is my garage roof asbestos?

Common signs your garage roof may contain asbestos (especially cement asbestos):

• Corrugated grey cement sheets
• Slightly dimpled or fibrous texture
• No modern manufacturer markings
• Typically on prefab concrete garages

You cannot confirm asbestos by sight alone — only testing proves it.

Do you need a specialist to remove it?
• Most garage roofs are asbestos cement, which is lower risk
• Many licensed roofers can remove asbestos cement legally
• However, they must follow proper safety and disposal procedures
• High-risk asbestos (rare in garages) requires licensed removal

Best practice: get a sample tested before any work."
