How deep should topsoil be

Going to turf the garden and keep seeing different depths mentioned, so I’m not sure what’s actually enough for the grass to take properly?

"Ideal depth of top soil for a lawn should be a minimum 150mm , 6 inches. However good drainage below that is also recommended."

"If your just turfing the garden then 6 inches is fine"

"If it’s for turf my first question would be what is wrong with the old lawn? Is it lack of drainage, was it not turfed before and was a flower bed,? is there underlying rubble.

It’s then not necessarily about how much topsoil is needed but what is going to be underneath it."

"100mm to 150 mm so that the new Turf roots can bed it properly"

"Hi, the top soil should be between 6 inches to 10 inches deep"
Answered on 22nd Feb 2026 - Member since Feb 2026 - report
"You’ll want around 100mm - 150mm (4–6 inches) of decent topsoil for turf.

100mm is usually enough to get it established, but closer to 125mm – 150mm gives the roots a bit more depth and helps in dry weather.

Just as important is the prep, clear weeds, loosen and level it properly, then firm it down so it doesn’t sink later. Most lawn problems come from poor prep rather than not having quite enough depth."

"Topsoil depth depends on the project: typically 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) for new lawns, 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) for garden beds, and over 12 inches (30+ cm) for deep-rooted vegetables. A good, all-purpose rule of thumb for general landscaping is to aim for 6 to 12 inches of quality, fertile soil for optimal plant growth"
