Is a metal shed better than a wooden one?

Question

Our old wooden shed has finally rotted through and I'm tempted by a metal one this time. Do they suffer with condensation though? It'll be storing power tools and the mower.

Hi Charles,

A metal shed is better than a wooden one if you want low maintenance and high security, but wood is better if you want a workshop or a traditional garden look.

Upkeep: Virtually maintenance-free; they will not rot, warp, or get eaten by insects.

Weather: Highly resistant to rain and wind when anchored properly, though cheap metal can suffer from internal condensation during damp UK winters.

Security: Generally harder to break into than standard thin timber walls.

Drawbacks: Can get very cold in winter and hot in summer, and it is harder to hang shelves or modify the interior.

Metal sheds tend to suffer with alot of damp as the walls aren't insulated. I would recommend either a plastic or composite shed they last for 10+ years

For storing power tools and a mower, I would choose a metal shed if low maintenance is the priority. Metal won’t rot like timber and generally requires less upkeep. Condensation can be an issue, though, so good ventilation and a suitable shed base are important. I've always found metal sheds to be far more flimsy. They are also a lot harder to repair should any issues arise

Metal sheds are not better than wooding sheds because they can not withstand high winds and are a nightmare to put up

Short answer: yes, metal sheds can suffer with condensation.
My advice is to replace the shed with a traditional wooden one.
Paint with a good quality wood stain before building and then ensure annual maintainace coats.
Looked after a wooden shed can last many many years
