Is composite decking cheaper than a concrete patio?

We are replacing a tired old patio and cannot decide between composite decking and concrete slabs. Which is cheaper once you include labour and which lasts longer with minimal upkeep? I think we're leaning more towards the composite decking right now but want some expert thoughts

"In most cases, concrete slabs will be cheaper overall, especially if the existing patio is being replaced and the base is already suitable. They’re also very low maintenance and can last for decades when installed correctly.

Composite decking tends to cost more initially, including the materials and installation, but it’s comfortable, modern-looking and requires very little upkeep. A good-quality composite deck can also last 20–30+ years.

If your main priorities are lowest cost and longevity, I’d lean towards concrete slabs. If you’re happy to spend a bit more for the look, comfort and minimal maintenance, composite decking is definitely worth considering."

"Composite decking can be competitive, but it isn’t always cheaper once you include the sub-base, frame and installation. Concrete paving is generally more economical for a straightforward patio, while composite decking has the advantage of being low-maintenance and not needing sealing or regular treatment. A properly installed concrete patio can also last many years. The best option depends on the size, access and ground conditions."

"There isn’t a straightforward winner on price, it depends on the materials, preparation and labour involved.

Composite decking can have a higher upfront cost than standard concrete slabs, but it offers very low maintenance and a long service life.

Concrete can be more economical initially, but the cost can increase depending on excavation, drainage, foundations and the slab finish required."

"Decking can cause rodent infestation as the void underneath decking allows the rodents to nest.

Whereas a paved patio is void free compacted for sound structure and maintenance free."

"Hello,, composite decking can be very nice but also very expensive, it will last a good amount of time and depending on the quality of the foundation may last nearly as long as a concrete properly installed, pricewise can be very similar but depending on the choice of composite decking, you go for, the best way is to get quotes for both."

"It all depends on the quality of composite Decking you choose and the quality of the paving you choose, the cost of the paving can range from £18 per square metre up to £50 per square metre, and a site survey would need to take place for a accurate quotation."

"No, composite decking is typically more expensive upfront than a standard concrete patio.
Upfront Cost: Concrete slabs are cheaper to buy and lay.
Groundwork: If your garden has a slope, a raised composite deck can sometimes save on heavy excavation costs compared to building retaining walls for concrete.
Maintenance: Both are low-maintenance long-term, but composite requires zero staining or sealing."
