Hard vs soft landscaping

What's the best percentage of hard and soft scaping to have in a medium sized garden? I want it to be manageable without feeling bare.

"In today’s society people are looking more for a minimalistic garden, which is easy to maintain so they’ll but at the same time to have a bit of colour with flowers and shrubs, it’s having that balance of being able to enjoy your garden without it looking to bare but not over baring that your garden is unmanageable to maintain.

Also you have to realise you have to think about what actually fits in with your garden and home.. think about is your home a country cottage or a house in a built up area. So there’s a lot to think about to what will work patio, decking area, lawn, gravel or bark, a area to grow your own veggies, just to give some idea.

For the very minimalistic look I’d try and incorporate a patio and pathed/gravelled area to go up and around your garden with a few raised boarders for planting shrubs and flowers, but again to incorporate with your boundary if being a fence or hedge and again it’s to do with the size of your garden depending on width and length.

Another question to ask yourself do you have children and allowing area for the children to play such as a lawned area.

If this is the case then maybe 50/50 percentage of what your looking for."

"30% plants. You will still have flowers and balance and if you choose hardy perennials, low upkeep requirements. Look at what establishes well in your neighbours garden and perhaps use this as a guide to ensuring you have the best chance of plants surviving with minimal maintenance. The best measure of what your existing conditions are catering for is looking over the fence (tactfully)."
