Is external cornice designed well to deal with the elements or would it depend on the product?

"Very few products arw suitable for outside elements so ideally a specialist product would be needed and applied professionally to avoid problems on the future"

"Should be fine against the elements but a good sealer applied will protect it for longer"

"External cornices are designed to help protect buildings from the elements, but their effectiveness depends on the material and installation"

"External cornice can be very durable if it is made from materials designed for outdoor use, such as GRP, polyurethane, or cement-based products. Its performance against the elements depends largely on the quality of the product and correct installation. When properly fitted and sealed, external cornice should cope well with weather, but cheaper or interior-grade products may deteriorate over time."

"External cornice can perform well against the elements, but its durability depends very much on the material used and the quality of installation.

Traditional materials such as stone, concrete, or well-rendered masonry are generally very durable and cope well with rain, frost and temperature changes when properly maintained.

Modern alternatives such as GRP (glass reinforced plastic), polyurethane, or exterior-grade polymers are also commonly used and can be highly weather-resistant if they are UV-stable and correctly fixed and sealed.

Key factors that affect performance include:
• The material specification
• Proper mechanical fixing (not just adhesive)
• Correct sealing of joints
• Adequate overhang and drip detailing to shed water
• Ongoing maintenance and painting where required

Poor installation or inadequate sealing can allow water ingress, which may lead to cracking, staining or movement over time.

So yes, external cornice is designed to withstand the elements, but performance ultimately depends on the product quality and how well it is installed."

"An external cornice does protect the property, but you can get different materials so it depends on that, however they do protect"
