Should old render be removed ?

Question

I’ve had a couple of quotes for silicone render. One contractor has said all the old render needs to be removed first back to brick, with the possibility that lead flashing to flat roof may fall out ( it’s only been installed a couple of weeks ago) the other contractor has said that he will only remove the blown old render before applying the new 3 layer silicone render (base coat, mesh & silicone). Which approach is correct?

I would recommend when re Rendering a house . To remove all existing Rendering.  So its a new sub base on brickwork before. New canvas so to speak. Obviously the lead work. Would then be loose depending on how secure it is. In the first instance.  Going over the top of old Rendering could lead to sub base issues. Such as blown render if does not bond correctly to it. Even if walls are sealed correctly.  Thats my advise.

Although i agree with sts. It is possible providing the old render is straight and isnt blown (hollow sound when you knock it) meaning it has come away from the orginal base. I dont see an issue with applying the mesh and silicone render to a solid base as you can save money time and hassle.

The down side is it will bring your reveals out and could negatively effect the overall finish and alsl inconvenience the person doing the job

You would only have to remove render if it was blown if solid would be fine to go over once primed

Blown silicone render can be repaired but I would want them to guarantee that it will work. Repairs to this type of render are not easy if it is only a small area should be fine. I hope this has helped in making your decision

Hi any plasters will say this as  needed  but you can silicone on top of the render as silicone will cover easily and be a protective surface

If you applying silicone rendering you don't need to remove existing render to brickwork

If the render is damaged or de laminating from the wall of the property it will need to be removed before Rendering. Alternatively if the render is sound there is no damp or mould you can use the EWI system using insulation boards with 2 fixings to hold in place a chemical fix and a mechanical fix. Once the existing Rendering is covered it can be basecoated and meshed then silicon top coat to finish, the render doesn't always need to be removed.

Hi

If your going to go for silicone render the whole lot of old render needs to come off back to brick/blank canvas and be re done with the new silicone system completely. Its not the sort of product or finish you can just apply to a few blown bits of render. Ive seen people do it in the past and its always the same un happy result.
