Door and window sensors

I've just seen a magazine article on Yale door and window sensors. Do you think these are a good alternative to a burglar alarm?

Door and window sensors are useful, but I wouldn’t treat them as a complete alternative to a burglar alarm.
They’re best used as part of a wider system. A contact sensor can tell you that a door or window has been opened, but on its own it may not provide an external siren, internal sounder, tamper protection, backup power, motion detection or any form of monitored response.
For a basic level of security they can still be worthwhile, especially on vulnerable doors and accessible windows. But for proper protection I’d recommend using them alongside a control panel, keypad, PIR detectors and a suitable internal/external sounder.
If you’re looking at a Yale system specifically, check what happens during a power or internet outage, what battery backup is provided, whether alerts rely on the cloud/app, and whether the system meets any requirements set by your home insurer.

Hi Joyce,

Yale and Swann etc are DIY kits, Security installers prefer not to install these, some do but most don’t.

However, If they are designed to do a certain job then I suppose they can be used, if they claim to be a window/door sensor, they should do that job.

Hi Alan here , we only install insurance approved grade 2 equipment, yale is not approved by any governing body such as the NSI or SSAIB , reason being is its absolute rubbish , its cheap for a reason

They are good for what they do, but for the extra security I would go for both alarm and door and window sensors

I have used the Ring system before and that is very effective.  Only downside to the independent sensors is they don't alert you remotely unlike a traditional wireless system they act as a deterrent though.

No.  Modern alarm system support wireless shock sensors and door contacts that connect to the alarm system providing an early warning against an intruder

I would say a burglar alarm is a lot more reliable, as the shock sensors dont always go off
