How to disconnect a house alarm DIY?

There's a unit in the house we've moved into, but it's beyond useless as it just goes off whenever we put it on. Can't be bothered with repairing it right now, so can I do something to disconnect it?

"There should be a fused spur. Take out the fuse and disconnect the battery inside the panel. The siren on the outside of the house will sound and the batteries will need to be taken out of this too. Do not try and disconnect any mains electric."

"Usual steps involve isolating the power and correctly disconnecting the backup battery within the control panel, but this should be done with care to avoid alarms or faults."

"if the system is going off for no reason cold be various problem here
1- low panel battery
2-could be a device fault i.e. door contact, pir sensor fault, bell box fault etc
3- could be a panel fault

easiest thing to do would be to turn main power off to panel then open panel and disconnect panel battery this will kill the system until you ready to get it looked at"

"Yes there should be a battery for a backup supply or the mains unplug it and it should turn it's self off straight away if not wait till the backup battery has ran out"

"If you just want to stop it going off rather than properly repair it, you can disable most domestic alarm systems fairly easily — but do it safely.

First, power it down properly. Most alarms have a control panel (often in a cupboard or hallway) and a backup battery.

Turn off the power at the fuse board (look for the circuit labelled alarm if there is one).
Open the alarm control box — you’ll likely need a screwdriver.
Inside, disconnect the mains supply (usually a fused spur nearby) and the backup battery. If you skip the battery, it’ll keep screaming.

Be aware: opening the box can trigger the tamper alarm, so it may go off briefly until everything is disconnected.

If there’s an external siren (bell box), that also has its own battery. Most of the time, once the main panel is fully powered down, the external bell will stop after a short period — but in some older systems it can keep sounding until its battery dies.

Important tips:

If you’re not confident with electrics, switch off power at the consumer unit first.
Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting anything, in case you (or someone else) want to reinstate it later.
Some systems are linked to monitoring services — worth checking you’re not accidentally triggering call-outs.

If you want a cleaner temporary fix, you could just remove the internal fuse supplying the alarm instead of dismantling everything.

That should quiet it down without needing a full replacement 👍"

"If it’s a wired alarm, just isolate the power (fuse spur or mains supply) and it’ll shut the system down, including the external siren.

If it’s a wireless system, the external siren will have its own battery, so you’ll need to disconnect power at the siren itself as well."
