Do I legally need a handrail in my late 1800 cottage?

We have just taken the stair rail off because it was falling off, filled in the holes and realized the stairs look great without them (it's incased in-between two walls) is there a legal requirement to have a rail?

"In short yes. If it’s more than 1 meter wide and more than 2 steps, which I’m assuming it will be."

"Yes every stair case is required to have a hand rail on at least one side or both sides if wider than a meter."

"The answer to your question is no as it’s not something new you are doing , but if you decide to sell the property you my get asked to put one back , I don’t think it will be a insurance problem as well but it’s worth a check .."

"No there are no legal requirements for any home unless you are intending to let the property"

"If you’d are happy enough & don’t require this to go up & down the stairs.. then it is only really a problem if you decide to sell/let your property. Then all buildings need to meet code."

"There is no legal requirement gor you to have hand rails, it's just disn to person preference and of course safety that is up to you guys.

It would be a legal requirement if was a busy communal area that was open to the public."

"Yes it is . Every steps has to have a sustainable way to hold in case someone will be out of balance and have a good chance in case of fall"
