How to hang a heavy panel artwork

Question

I have an 800 × 1120 mm, 9 mm birch plywood artwork panel that needs hanging on a wall. What is the best way to do so? The panel is painted and needs to sit close to the wall. I'm weary of screwing anything into the panel as don't want to ruin the artwork. Any solution? Many thanks in advance.

avoiding screws your best bet may be command strips or a very strong double sided tape (both of which you will find are pretty cheap on Amazon).

For something more reliable for a heavier painting you could explore securing a small shelf or frame to the wall and that would hold the artwork against the wall, even if it was heavy.

i would use split baton to the wall and the artwork. you can use heavy duty adhesive for the split baton on the artwork. That will give it a solid fix.

There is many options but if you wants you can put it in a timber frame beads around the perimeter of the art work and pins tapped in side ways on the back so the art work doesnt fall out. One you do that you can either drill the baton to the wall or hang it off the batton with a hook or chain but like i say there is many ways of putting the art work up. Just pends what type design and style you want and also budget your willing to spend.

For a 9 mm birch plywood panel that size (800 × 1120 mm), I'd avoid adhesives and I'd also avoid screwing through the face of the artwork. The cleanest solution is to attach a hanger to the back of the panel so it sits almost flush with the wall.

I would drill in 3 to 6 inch. 
Put in metal plug. Tap it in.
Then do that at 4 corners. 
And may be in middle. 
Then screw in, as you screw in, the first plug will open up and catch the side of wall/ brick, and give a real hard grip.

You could and in the past iv built a frame on wall and sit the artwork in that as long as frame is the right size for the art and the some secret oggles to stop it falling forward....

Hello,

For something like this, I’d probably go with a French cleat. It’s a good option if you want the panel sitting nice and close to the wall without having to put screws through the front.

You can bond the cleat to the back of the plywood with a suitable strong adhesive, then fix the matching part securely to the wall. It spreads the weight nicely and keeps everything fairly neat and close to the wall.

The main thing is making sure the adhesive and cleat are suitable for the weight of the artwork, and using the right wall fixings depending on whether it’s plasterboard, brick, concrete etc.
