  • What is the standard height of kitchen worktops?

What is the standard height of a kitchen worktop? I have just had a new kitchen installed and the work surfaces appear to be quite a bit higher than the appliances. Any ideas?

How wide do extension footings need to be?

Hello all, I am planning on some extension work and have not been able to find out how wide the footings for the foundations will need to be. I’ve been told they need to be 1 metre deep, but not how wide. Could anyone enlighten me on this, please? This will be a single storey extension on entirely flat ground.

average cost of handyman for an 8 hour day

What is considered a full working day for a handyman? I often see the hourly and daily rates of different types of labourers. Is the daily rate a direct accumulation of the total hours worked. Say it’s 8 hours worked, is the daily rate just eight hourly rates? Or is the daily rate a separate charge that is actually more than the total number of hours worked x the hourly rate? How does this work? Does it vary based on the contractor and their industry? Does it depend on where the contractor is based? I’m really curious to know the ins and outs of hourly vs. daily rates of contractors. Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.

What paint should I use for new skirting boards and doors?

Hi, I need to paint the new skirting boards and door frame in my living room. I'm not sure which paint to use. I know that the new wood will need undercoating but I just want to know what the best paint would be for a high-quality finish. I don't really like gloss painted wood so are there any other options? Should i be using oil-based or water-based paints? Thank you.

Can I turn my conservatory into an extension?

Hi all, I have a conservatory attached to the house currently which features a dwarf wall. I was wondering if it would be possible to convert the conservatory, building from the dwarf wall upwards. It has a concrete floor and significant footings from what I can tell. Can this be converted into a single storey extension? Would anybody know if this is feasible or if it would be cheaper than a completely new extension? Many Thanks

Having electricity fitted into a garden shed

I've just had a garden shed built in my garden to be used as a workshop. I need to run an electricity cable from my back kitchen over to the shed about 15 metres away. I have a power socket outside but I don’t just want to run an extension and i'm not sure if i'll need some sort of safety measure in place? Will I also need to get certification of its safety?

Do I need a Double Check Valve for a Garden Tap?

Hi All, I am looking to install a new garden tap at home. Some have told me that I would need a “double-check valve” fitted for the water supply, to prevent freezing the valve in cold weather. Is this an absolute requirement? Would this mean that I would have the valve inside the house and then use a garden tap that does not contain this valve inside it? Are there any problems in using a tap with a check valve built-in, instead? IE – could it still cause freezing during cold weather? Any advice would be appreciated!

    Can I paint over mould/mildew?

Hi there, I fear I might have mould or mildew in my bedroom under a bay window. I have washed the walls twice now but it seems to be returning. Will an a mould killer do the job? I have debated sanding it over and painting/skimming the area but dont want to if it's going to return. Is there a special paint I can buy to go over it? How do i identify what it is exactly? Thanks in advance.
