Windows Won't Open/Hold Up

Question

I have 2 windows that should slide up and hold - however neither will. A believe a part is missing to ensure the window will hold. Would appreciate any help/advice.

Hello, these sound like sash windows they will either be on weights and a pulley system or what is known as spiral balance , if the cord breaks on the weight system then the window will not stay open , likewise if the spiral balance comes off the window also will not stay open. Sash cord windows can have a number of problems ,the cord could be broken may need re cording or the pockets may need cleaning out ,if the glass has been changed at sometime the weights are not heavy enough in this case buy some lead and add to the weights so the window hods up,I would try and clean the pockets were the weights are housed first a simple fix ,on modern windows there is springs used the tension may need adjusting which can only be done by a professional tradesman ,good luck with it
