What to put under decorative stones

We're doing the front garden in slate chippings and dont want weeds coming through. is membrane enough underneath or does it need something else?

Weed membrane is OK but weeds can still come through! A better option would be to cover the area (dig out first if required) with 50-100mm of MOT type 1 aggregate then compact it with a wacker plate, then put the weed membrane over the top before putting down your decorative stones.

A good method is to remove any existing weeds, grass, roots. Level and compact the soil, and lay a durable permeable membrane, overlapping the joints around 10-15 cm and securing it with ground pegs. Spread the slate chippings to a depth of  around an inch and a half to 2 inches this helps keep the membrane covered and reduces weed growth.

If this is a path way for light foot traffic or just a border I would dig out 75mm. Lay a teram membrane covered in mot type 1, compact the area then your ready to lay your slate chippings on top. The membrane will protect from weeds and the type 1 forms a solid base to prevent the chipping being directly on soil, sinking and become a mud pit.

For the best long-term result, we recommend excavating the area to around 100–150mm, compacting the ground if needed, then laying a quality geotextile weed membrane before adding 40–50mm of slate chippings. Installing a proper edging will also help keep the slate in place and give a much neater finish.
