What is the best way to paint my living room skirting board?

How do I paint the skirting board in my living room effectively, efficiently and in a way that doesn’t make a mess, say on the floor? I’ve a carpet floor so I’m worried about paint dripping on to it and want to make sure I avoid this!

"Hi good masking is the answer. You will need a 2” masking tape which must be removed before paint is completely dry .

"You can either make sure you tape plastic cover or, just pull the carpet and refit it once job done."

"Firstly, lightly sand down all skirting that`s going to be painted, and clean and vacuum all areas. Stick down white masking tape as close as possible to the skirting`s making sure you do not add too much paint at the base of the skirting because it may run down behind the masking tape onto the carpet. Same will apply if you have wooden flooring, making sure to add a very small amount of caulking to the base of skirting. Once painted, score using a Stanley knife and carefully remove. This will add a clear finish edge."
