What are timber knots?

What are timber knots, how is it treated and could I treat it DIY? Thanks!

"Hi The knots in any timber are node points on a tree. As for treating them, it depends on whether they are dead or live knots.

"Timber knots are the branches on trees or stemming from the truck of the tree. This is in all timbers, hardwood and softwood.
Sometimes when painted they will seem to be leaking or there may be a dark brown stain some kind of liquid which is called Sap. To prevent this, apply knotting first (knotting paint), then continue painting to complete."

"Knots in timber are small and large branches of the tree the timber came from .before its felled there is a knotting treatment for knots and I do believe the Dulux centers stock it I hope this helps"
