Upgrading an existing loft conversion

Question

I've bought a house with a loft conversion that's very basic and not classed as a bedroom. I'd like to upgrade it to make it an extra bedroom, improving the window, insulation and heating. The access stairs are fine, but I probably need doors and alarms fitting too from what I've read. What's the first step I need to take to sort this out? Does it need an inspection or survey done?

Hi,

Minimum course of action is to engage a structural engineer who will survey and design the structure to meet latest building reg requirements.

An architect may be required for design of the envelope or the builder can submit a notice to building control which will then be inspected at the appropriate intervals.

You will need a structural engineer report and would be worth contacting building control.

You'll probably need a lot more than that if the space is not compliant to regulations. I would seek the advice of architect or a qualified builder as the regs are quite onerous.
