What leads to grey denatured wood? What should I do to treat this?

"Hi Greg,
If it is outside, wood is said to silver in the sun, so UV damage I suppose. If interior, just dirt and wear over time.
Sand, plane or remove the silver surface to reveal fresh wood underneath, and then oil it with an appropriate oil. eg. Tung Oil, teak oil, danish oil,. There are many different types, some with other additives to suit different purposes.
