Is it better to have battery storage for solar panels?

Do I need a battery storage system when I get solar panels? If so, where does this get fitted and how much space does it need?

"Hi Elly, it’s most definitely the best option to have battery storage when having solar panels fitted. For the hours of darkness you can then use the stored power for consuming before then reverting back to the grid.
Your supplier for solar should be able to show you examples of the size and space needed for the batteries.
They are approximately 600x400x200mm in size and mostly 2 batteries are mounted side by side or on top of each other.
Hope that helps.

"Hi Elly

You don’t have to have battery storage you can just have solar panels fitted. I would say it is more beneficial to also have battery storage though. You can get some decent pay back for the energy you don’t use from the likes of Octopus Energy. You can top the batteries up at night on a cheap rate and use the electric later when price per KWh is more expensive. Obviously the psnels will top your batteries up aswell. It all really depends on how big the system is, what you need to power and most importantly the pay back time set against the system cost.
Batteries can go in your loft or I prefer in a garage, if you have the space. Most batteries can be fitted outside but cold weather can affect there performance.
Hope this helps a little.

Thanks,
Scott"

"It depends if you're home a lot during the day. If you are then a battery isn't necessarily required. If you're out during the day then a battery would be required to store the energy, so you can use it during the evening.

Ideally in a garage, If not the loft. You can also fit some systems externally."

"Yes. The best way to save money is to use batteries in a PV system. After the batteries are loaded, excess electricity is exported to the grid. The export price is about 50% lower than the import price. Therefore, the energy should be charged to the batteries and then used. The batteries occupy about 0.3 square meters of space near the inverter."

"It is not a straight forward answer. I would in most cases say no.

A typical home battery will take up the space of a small dish washer. They vary in depth."
