New CU for Garage and potential EV charger in future

Hi There

I am looking for some advice regarding having power run to my separate garage. Firstly I just wondered if its possible to have a new CU installed in my garage which is connected directly to the electric meter rather than connecting this to the existing CU. The reason for this is that the electric meter outside is within 5 meters of the garage and running a cable from the existing CU would be difficult as it is located near the center of the house and would struggle to get an outdoor cable to it without significant work.

Secondly, would I be able to have an EV charger connected to this new garage CU or would that also need another feed from the meter.

I will of course get a qualified person to perform the job if I go ahead but just looking into whats possible at the moment.

Thank you!

"Yes, you can have a new CU connected from the meter .

You can also have the EV charger connected to the garage CU, but you need to let the electrician know everything the second CU will be used for so they can design appropriately."

"Yes, you can install another connection at source via a connection block.
Yes, you can have a fuse board in the garage.
Yes, you can install an EV from the second fuse board, however, the electrician will need to be aware of this when you install the second word as he will need to ensure his cable calculations are correct beforehand."

"Yes this is perfectly acceptable as long as you use the correct cables and isolations."

"Hi Simon

This is possible yes and do able to do a new feed from the meter would need a switch fuse to break the supply of the cable, and then direct to an
metal clad consumer unit complete with spd and rcbo protection, the ev charger can be fed off of that board then yes on a 32/40a rcbo

Kind regards

"Hi, Yes, it is possible to install a separate consumer unit (CU) in your garage. In many cases, this can be supplied directly from the meter via a suitably rated switch or isolator, especially since your meter is close to the garage. This can sometimes be a simpler and cleaner solution than running a long submain from your existing CU inside the house.

As for the EV charger, that can also be connected to the new garage CU, provided the supply and installation are designed with enough capacity to handle the additional load. Your electrician will carry out load calculations and make sure everything meets current regulations, including earthing, cable size and protective devices.

The next step would be to have a qualified electrician assess the setup on site — they’ll be able to confirm the most practical and cost-effective option for you."

"Hello,
Yes most Likely anything is possible,,
Shower the 1st is to get a Sparky to carry out Electrical assessment on what’s required ETC… what type of Dwellings you have routes access etc. The Electrician should before considering to provide a quote for the work required should do an EICR
( Electrical Inspection Condition Report) on the existing electrical system within the property at a charge,, once the EICR report has been completed the Electrician can determine exactly what is required to install the electrical works and provide a quote,,, bare please also know that the EICR may pass it may Fail if it Fails then the Remedial works needs to be corrected be any other works can be carried out to the existing electrical System therefore issuing the client a pass certificate,, Remedial works if required are at a cost to the client and then the works required can be installed for you again at an agreed Quote.
I hope this information will help you."

"Yes, it is possible to install a new consumer unit (CU) in your garage and connect it directly to the electric meter rather than the existing CU in your house. Since your meter is only about 5 meters away, this is a practical solution and avoids the complexity of running a cable from the main CU inside the house.

You can also install an EV charger from this new garage CU without needing a separate feed from the meter, provided the new CU is designed and rated appropriately for the additional load. I will ensure proper sizing of cables, protective devices, and compliance with regulations if you select me to carry on work"

"Hi

This is a common requirement.

The best solution is a second consumer unit in the garage.

The cable required can be sized to support the demand including the EV.

The EV will require a specialist cable as the charger needs to monitor whole house demand to protect the main fuse.

I hope this helps.

"Yes this is possible. A qualified electrician can add a lewden 100a connector block to spur to a new consumer unit."
