Sand and cement render

We have removed an old fireplace surround and blocked it up with timber frame and 18mm ply 900mm x 520mm.. looking to render the whole area including the ply 1200mm x 950mm.. To sand cement render over ply do i need to seal it with PVA or Bluegrit? And add an EML?

"Should have used cement board if your are putting sand and cement on it, but if you put roof felt them eml over the ply, it will work, we used do this before cement board was available, chimney will also need to be vented so you don't get damp issues"

"you need to put building paper{tyvek or similar} over the ply first then EML and scratch the wall. No PVA or similar needed. Bearing in mind when rendering over ply like this it pulls in very fast.
Hope this helps
