Job not yet finished

The builder completed part of the work and we paid 60%. He said he had injury how do we proceed? How do we know if true. We still have lot of work left and no kitchen access

"1-Look at any contract, quote, text, or email that shows:
• What work was agreed to,
• The payment schedule, and
• Any terms about delays or illness.

Even if it’s informal (like WhatsApp messages), that’s still evidence of your agreement.
2-Since you paid 60%, do not pay any more until:
• The agreed next stage is complete, and
• You’ve inspected the quality.

If he doesn’t return, you may be able to claim part of your payment back for uncompleted work — through small claims court or Trading Standards (UK) if you’re in the UK."

"If the builder has not done 60% of the work then ask for the remaining balance back. If they have given you a date that they will start back up once they’ve recovered then try your best to honour that as some builders will charge more to pick up other people’s work. If you’re worried that they’ve ripped you off then report them to trading standards. Hope this helps"

"I would say don't jump straight to conclusion but also make sure your job is protected and check what you have agreed on"

"Unfortunately there is no real way to know if it’s true. Set a deadline to start work again and agree if not commenced then set out how much you feel will need to be repaid"

"Well you will have to get another builder in to price up what's remaining and see if remaining works is around 40 % of total price. If itscto far off ask original contractor to pay the difference back.."

"He might be telling the truth hopefully u have only paid for materials and the work thats been done don't pay anymore till the work is completed"

"Since beginning you should have paid him based on the job he done. In this case ask for the payment overpaid back. After that you can proceed with the other things like scheduling the start date, when he will be back, if he will be back etc.
Wish this helps you.
Regards!"

"Of course, something can happen, but he should continue work quickly. Sometimes this happens when you hire cheap and unreliable builders. I hope you will get out of trouble quickly."

"Use the other 40% you held back to hire another builder. If he was a good builder maybe ask him to recommend someone for you. I hope this helps"

"I would ask for hospital notes and get another tradesman like myself to complete the work and ask for receipts of material and way up how much has been spent and what's left on the quote for the new tradesman"
