japanese knotweed issues

Are you obliged to hire a professional if there is Japanese knotweed in your garden? I do not have this issue as of now but a neighbour had a problem with it before and I’ve heard of a few other people in the area experiencing issues with Japanese knotweed so I thought I would ask in advance should it happen to appear in my back garden. What else must I do in this scenario? I am aware of course that you must not cut it but what else must I do and must I not do if it ever pops up?

"Hi Carol
Japanese knotweed can be an issue because it is a protected wild plant but don't worry, if you do have problems in the future the environment agency can answer any problems you have."
