Artificial Grass Cleaning

I have a question. I have artificial grass (5m x 7m) in my small garden that smells like puppy wee. I have used an artificial grass cleaner on it many times but I still cant get it to smell clean. I don't have a hose in the garden so that makes it tricky. Can this be cleaned properly to remove the smell?

Thanks
Caitlin

"When artificial grass cleaner fails, it's because it doesn't break down the uric acid crystals causing the smell.

Instead, you need to use an **enzyme-based cleaner** for artificial grass.

* Mix it with water in a watering can and fully saturate the grass to let the enzymes break down the smell at the source.
* After the recommended time, use clean water in the watering can to rinse it thoroughly.

For a temporary fix, a **vinegar and water solution** can help neutralize the smell, and **baking soda** can absorb any remaining odours."

"Hiya Caitlin,
The smell can be taken away there are many home remedies that could be applied but I would personally go safe to employ a cleaner who will specialise in this sort of thing"

"To tackle strong urine smells on artificial grass—especially when it's persistent or worsens in warm weather—enzyme-based cleaners are your best bet. These break down uric acid crystals, which are the real culprits behind lingering odours. If your turf still smells after cleaning, it may be due to poor drainage or buildup in the sub-base. In that case, a professional deep clean might be worth considering."

"Good morning Caitlin,

I will try and keep this as short but in detail as I possible can for you… So the answer is; Yes, it is possible to clean artificial grass to remove the puppy urine smell, even without a hose. There are some very simple some steps that you could do to rid of the smell:

So best thing to use would be: Enzyme Cleaners: Regular artificial grass cleaners don’t fully break down the urine. Enzyme-based cleaners specifically target the organic compounds in urine and help eliminate odours rather than just masking them. I would use eBay,Amazon ot Google for pet enzyme cleaners designed for artificial turf that’s the first step..

You could also suggest using home based ingredients like Diluted Vinegar Solution: A mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) can help neutralize urine odors. Spray the solution generously over the affected areas and let it sit for about 15-30 minutes before blotting it up with a clean cloth or paper towels.

Now if the smell persists despite these hard working efforts, it could be due to urine seeping into the base layer beneath the turf, which is harder to clean without professional tools. In that case, you might consider consulting a professional cleaner who can deep clean your artificial grass for you.

I hope this helps and good luck :-)
