In need of low-maintenance pergola ideas

How do I make a pergola with climbing plants low maintenance? Can I use metal instead of wood? Will plants be able to climb up? And what climbing plants need the least pruning etc?

"The weakest part of a pergola is where the posts meet the ground. We install the posts on brackets that hold the timber up off the ground. That give the timber every chance at its full life expectancy.
You could use tensioned wire for the plants to climb on instead of timber, that would also help to keep it looking its best for longer.
On the choice of climber, low pruning and slow growth go hand in hand. There are a lot of options, scented/unscented, bushy, not busy, etc... But for lowest maintenance I would suggest finding a slow growing climber and maybe pay for a bigger one so you don't have to wait 5+ years for it to find its way over the pergola!
I would steer clear of Jasmines, they are generally bushy and fast growing - high maintenance. But they are pretty..."

"If you want low-maintenance climbers your best bet is to use ever green climbers as there leaves do not fall off unlike traditional deciduous plants. And yes you can find a wide variety of climbing plants which will climb up metal structures."

"Hi harry. Using metal instead of wood is lower maintenance if it is prepared using a metal paint for longevity. Most climber plants will find their own way up although it doesn’t hurt to by clip and twist green cable from a garden centre to support it up. I would say a wisteria would need the least pruning at 1/2 times a year and clematis would be the most pruned.

Hope this helps"

"I would always go with a wooden pergola. Metal pergolas can prove disastrous for plants during the summer and winter months due to the extreme temperatures the metal will reach. I would suggest using an English ivy if you’re looking for low maintenance or even Virginia creeper. Virginia creeper are really low maintenance and the leaves go a beautiful deep red colour in the autumn"
