How much does mulching a garden cost?

Our borders are looking tired and I've been told mulching them would help. What do gardeners typically charge for this? is it priced by the bag or by the area?

Applying a mulch such as compost, pulverised pine needles or leaf mould is certainly beneficial to any soil. Price depends how many sqm the borders are. I personally wouldn't use bark as the natural bacteria it attracts tends to rob nutrients from the soil. I certainly wouldn't recommend applying a weed fabric on cultivated borders either as that's not what it is intended for. It's intended to go under gravel areas, driveways, and to protect drainage pipes. I'd be aiming for a layer if roughly 3 inches applied directly onto the soil across the whole border to make any noticeable difference in weed suppression, moisture retention and soil conditioning.

a bulk bag would be 500 litres and at typical depth of 2-3 inches this would cover 8 sq.m approx and cost £85 from your nearest builders merchant. But its light and easy to spread typically with some prep and laying a weed membrane - a couple of hours work @ £30/hour would cover a sizeable area. I would charge for the job if given exact size of area.
