How often should timber decking be replaced?

We've got a hardwood deck that's about 12 years old. Some boards are starting to grey and split at the ends. Is this the beginning of the end or is it still worth treating and keeping?

This is sadly a , " how long is a piece of string answer," 
Because it all depends on the condition of the wood. 
If the wood has been well kept and isn't bowed or rotten , you may get another 8 - 10 years use out of it. 
If the only issue is cosmetic ( greying) grab and orbital  sander or an electric planer , take it back to bare wood and re treat it . Wood does split over time , but its noting that csnt be stabilised with an epoxy based stabilising agent
