How much underlay do i need?

I'm mainly asking because I don't understand if I need underlay under everything or just the main floor area? There are wardrobes and odd corners in the room, so I’m not sure if underlay goes wall to wall or only where the flooring will be walked on. Don't think it'll make much impact to the cost, but just trying to get it as close to a pro as a I can!

"Underlay should normally be fitted wall to wall, not just in the main walking areas. It provides consistent support for the flooring, helps with insulation and sound reduction, and prevents uneven wear. Even in areas like wardrobes or alcoves, it’s best practice to run it throughout the whole room for a professional, long-lasting finish."

"Underlay should be covering the whole floor so you get an even wear on the carpet. Its always best to get the best Underlay you can afford to give a better feel and a longer lasting carpet"

"Remove the wardrobe and any other items and underlay and carpet the whole just in case you want to alter the layout of the bedroom"

"You generally lay underlay wall-to-wall, everywhere the flooring will go — not just the main walking areas. That includes wardrobes, odd corners, and alcoves if they’re getting the same flooring.

Even if those spots don’t get much foot traffic, full coverage keeps the floor height consistent, prevents movement at edges, helps with sound/insulation, and avoids future issues if furniture gets moved around. Installers don’t usually try to pick “traffic zones” — they just blanket the whole room.

The only places you’d skip underlay are areas where flooring itself isn’t being installed (like under fixed cabinets that stay on the subfloor)."

"You need to underlay the whole area wall to wall to keep floor nice and level if you leave out where furniture goes you’ll end up with dips all over your room"

"Hello

You only need underlay to cover where flooring is being installed. But if the wardrobes are movable then you would need underlay for the whole floor so your wardrobes can go on top of the flooring.

Many thanks"

"my advise leave it to the pro as you will probably lay the underlay upside down"
