How much can I extend my house without planning permission?

I’ve heard some extensions don’t need planning permission, but I’m confused about how much you’re actually allowed to build. What are the usual limits, and when does planning become unavoidable?

"Single storey extension to rear is 3m for an attached property
4m for a detached property.
Single storey to the side up to half the width of your existing house.
Further information is available on the planning portal website."

"single-storey rear extensions are capped at 4m deep (detached) or 3m (others), though this can double to 8m/6m with prior approval, provided they are under 4m high and cover less than 50% of the garden.
However you will need plans and information building control"

"(under permitted development) by up to 3–4 metres for single-storey rear extensions (3m for terraced/semi, 4m for detached) or up to 6–8 metres via "prior approval". Single-storey side extensions must not exceed 4m in height or half the original house width."

"Single-storey extensions
If your extension will have one storey, you do not need planning permission if:

it's located at the back of the house
it does not go back further than 3 metres if it's a terraced house, or 4 metres if it is not
the height of the eaves (where the wall meets the roof) is no higher than 3 metres
it is not higher than 4 metres, including sloping roofs
it does not cover more ground area than the original house did
it, and any other development, does not take up half or more of the grounds behind your home - known as the 'rear curtilage'
it is not within a conservation area"
