Cost to convert two garage doors into one

Question

We've got a double garage with two separate up and over doors and the middle pillar is a nightmare for parking. What would it cost to take the pillar out and fit one wide door, and is that pillar ever structural?

The centre pillar can be structural, so it should not be removed until it has been assessed by a structural engineer. If it is load-bearing, a new steel beam/lintel will normally be required to span the wider opening. As a rough guide, structural alterations, steelwork and making good could cost around £3,000–£6,000, with a new double-width garage door typically adding £2,000–£4,000 depending on specification. Overall, I would budget approximately £5,000–£10,000. Building Regulations approval may also be required.

Without seeing the job it’s only a ballpark estimate you’ll probably have to install a steel hoping the building control or architect does not ask for goal posts
