How long do cornices last?

How long do cornices tend to last before they need to be replaced? Are some products significantly more durable than others?

"all Depends on the house which ones you go for, even plasterboard cornices fitted correctly will last as long as any plasterboard ceiling 50+ years , plaster cornices do look great, more choice and styles but are dearer to buy/install and more resilient should you have a water leak from above - Garth’s plastering"

"Internal cornices can last the lifetime of the property if kept dry.

Plaster and polyurethane products are very durable indoors. External cornice (concrete or GRP) can also last decades if maintained.

Most failures are caused by:

• Damp
• Poor fixing
• Structural movement

Quality installation makes a big difference."

"A fibrous plaster coving or cornice if installed properly will last a lifetime."

"The lifespan of cornices depends largely on the material used, the quality of installation, and whether they are internal or external.

Internal cornices (plaster/gypsum):
When properly installed and kept dry, traditional plaster cornices can last 50+ years, often the lifetime of the property. They typically only need replacement if affected by water damage, structural movement, or impact.

Lightweight materials such as polyurethane or polystyrene can also last many years internally, provided they are well fixed and painted, though they are generally less impact-resistant than solid plaster.

External cornices:
Durability varies more significantly:
• Stone or concrete: 50+ years with maintenance
• GRP or high-quality polymer: 20–40 years depending on exposure and installation
• Timber: Can last decades but requires regular maintenance and painting

In most cases, cornices do not need replacing due to age alone — issues usually arise from water ingress, poor installation, lack of maintenance, or building movement.

Higher-quality materials and correct installation will significantly increase lifespan."
