Why does gloss go yellow? Is there any white gloss I can get that doesn't eventually go yellow?

"Hi
You can get a quick dry water base gloss ,this stays whiter much longer ,preparation before use is to give the surfaces a really good sand use water base undercoat first ,

Also if there isn't a lot of day light this can cause the gloss to yellow"

"Hello,
All oil based white paints yellow over time.

Only water based (acrylic) gloss paints don't yellow.

Having said the above statement, I would choose oil topcoat over acrylic any day.

Oil paint is much harder wearing, and gives a better finish.

There are places that only acrylic paint will do, like all underground train stations.

The final choice is yours, but on my own house I use oil."

"White gloss goes yellow mainly due to the alkyd oils in traditional oil-based paints reacting with lack of sunlight and moisture, but you can get non-yellowing options like high-quality water-based acrylic glosses, water-based satinwood, or specialised hybrids, with fully water-based paints being the most resistant to yellowing for a long-lasting white finish."

"If your gloss has gone yellow is it because it is oil based gloss. Oil based gloss needs to day light to stay white. Your best option is the sand down, undercoat and apply water based gloss instead"

"Unfortunatly most Glosses go yellow over time, one thing is to ensure you sand back woodwork first and i would recomend a satin white as its less likely to yellow."

"The passage of time results in discolouration, thus it is unavoidable. 10 years and inevitably the standard oil based gloss will lose that brilliant white,"
