How to paint over water stains on a ceiling?

We had a leak from the bathroom which has now been fixed but it has left brown marks on the ceiling below. Will they bleed through if I simply paint over them or does something need to go on first?

"The first important thing to do, is to let all offending areas completely dry out before deciding how to repair the affected areas.

It maybe necessary to replace to whole plaster board where once damaged.

If not, the cheapest option once you are convinced that everything has dried sufficiently, is to mix together, 2 parts oil based white undercoat with 0.7 parts white spirit and apply to the damaged surface, extending to beyond the damaged area whereby its fully contained.

Leave for 24 hours and paint over with your chosen matt white emulsion paint.

Hope that helps."

"Hi Kelly yes they will bleed through if you don't put a stain block on them. There is many types of stain block on the market but I always use zinsser bin 123 in a can or in a spray bottle. Hope this helps thanks Charlie @Hendricks Decorating"

"You’d need to apply a coat of oil based stain block on the effected areas. Let it dry overnight then apply two coats of emulsion."
