Floating hardwood floor?

Can a solid hardwood floor be floated?

"Hello! You should really only float engineered hardwood flooring as solid wood doesn't really have the structural stability to be floated. Once of the many many advantages of engineered hardwood flooring - you get the stability, relative ease of installation and the solid wood top! Solid wood would move so much, without fixing it down it would end in disaster ;-) Engineered flooring all the way! Hope this helps - only my opinion of course."

"I would highly recommend using engineered ply flooring with a real wood veneer on the top of it, lot easier to fit, less movement and you get the same end result"

"Yes in much the same way a laminate floor is laid. However it is not something I would recommend doing yourself. You need a good carpenter who is experienced in this type of job"

"Provided enough expansion is allowed around the perimeter if skirting is fitted on top of said flooring.
The floating floor will be fine."

"Hi yes it is the proper way to lay a floor, unless it is fitted on stairs"

"Yes of corse it can all a floating floor means is its just loose lay on top of underlays but I would allow a 10mm gap around the edge to allow for expansion in temperature change. Thus is usually hidden beneath skirting boards of beading of your choice, how ever hard wood is louder than a soft wood"

"No solid hardwood flooring needs to be fixed to sub flooring either nailed or glued down."
Answered on 6th Dec 2022 - Member since Nov 2022 - report
"yes. However, you have to glue the flooring together rather than gluing to the substrate. Good quality PVA glue between the toungue and grooves.

A floor nailed / gliued to the substrate is always the preferrd option though.

Hope that helps"
