EV charge point

My garage has what has been described as a "standard" garage supply box.
The box contains a 63A Mains switch along with two breakers B6 and B16. The house /build is about 20 25 years old. Can I run an EV charger from this supply. Garage has 3 double fluorescents and some power sockets for my power tools Other than that an up and over electric door opener.

"Hello,
This would largely depend on the size of the cable feeding the garage board. However the usual way EV chargers are installed is to split the meter tails and install a small sub-board that is dedicated to the EV charger.
I hope this answers your question, happy to offer more advice if needed."

"Unfortunately, you can take supply from your garage consumer unit to provide power for your EV charger.

Although the main switch says 63A, it doesn't mean it is supplying 63A. That is the rating of the main switch. As well as this you have to look at the size of the cable supplying the garage consumer unit.

Your best option is - Either an IP65 consumer unit with power fed from the outside electric meter cupboard via Henley block

OR

Another consumer unit inside which must be metal clad to comply to latest regulations. If you already have a metal clad consumer unit inside then it may be possible to provide power for the EV charger via an RCBO from any available spare ways"

"No You need to call DNO to come and change the main fuse to the 100A also i prefer to add SPD to your charger However You need to do testing as well"

"Hello,

You need to have an electrician access the main incoming tails to determine if they can be split and a small fuseboard solely for the ev charger can be fitted."

"It actually depends what the supply cable is to the garage, as in lots of cases there is only 2.5mm Cable supplying it.
Also some EV Chargers require a Coms cable installed to the Mains Supply tails, at the supply Origin."

"Most EV ‘s come with a slow charge lead which has a 13 amp plug
If the garage installation has been carried out correctly you should be able to charge your car using this
Would normally take 12 / 18 hours depending on the mileage range
If you want a fast charge the an independent supply would have to be run from the house"

"I would personally advise you to contact your electricity supplier and request them to upgrade the main switch fuse from 63A to 100A, along with this, they will upgrade the supply leads to 6mm size cable and they should do so free of charge!"

"Hi
Most important thing is the size of the supply cable to the garage board.
Normally these are too small for a charger, a 6mm would be needed."

"Hi - You need to check what the fuse rating is that supplies the garage on your Consumer unit that is in the house - The 63a on the box in the garage means this box is rated for up to 63amps but the fuse in the house will be lower and this what will limit the amount of power you can use in the garage. Whatever the size of the breaker is in the house (For the garage) you should then allow for 10-15 amps for what is existing in the garage and you can then use the remainder to supply a car charger. Because the items in the garage are not always in use you do not need to allow the full 6amps and 16amps that the breakers state you can allow for a bit less."
