Do you need architect for garage conversion?

We're just about to start getting quotes from some reputable local places, but I'm unclear on whether we need an architect for this sort of job?

"To carry out a garage conversion does not require an architect as long as all details are clear for the contractor to interpret.
However building regulations is a requirement."

"you don’t usually need an architect for a garage conversion, especially if it’s a straightforward job like turning it into a bedroom, office, or playroom without major structural changes, as many experienced builders or design-and-build companies can handle the drawings and building regulations for you; however, it’s worth considering an architect if you’re planning something more complex like knocking through walls, changing the layout significantly, dealing with tricky light or access issues, or aiming for a more bespoke finish, in which case their input can really add value and help avoid costly mistakes—so a good approach is exactly what you’re doing: get quotes from reputable local builders, ask if they manage drawings and regs and have done similar projects, and if it starts to sound complicated, that’s a good point to bring an architect in."

"Yes you would need an architect for a garage conversion as further down the line this would cause problems when coming to sell the property . The property would be sold with an indemnity policy"

"In most cases, you do not always need an architect for a garage conversion.
It depends on the complexity of the project.

If the conversion is simple — such as insulation, plastering, flooring, electrics, windows or internal layout — an experienced builder can usually manage the work and follow building regulations.

However, if structural changes are required (removing walls, raising the roof, changing foundations, major extensions), then architectural drawings and structural calculations may be necessary.

Also, if planning permission is required, an architect can help with the application process.

The best step is to arrange a site visit with a professional contractor first.
They can assess the property and advise whether architectural services are needed or not."

"If you're doing simple basics (no high extend etc)conversion then you don't need an architect."

"Hi Mo, no you don't.. You can submit a basic plan to the building control office.. You can do the plan yourself if able.. Depending on what your converting the garage into or if any structural changes are required as to whether building control will need to visit.
Kind regards
