Conservatory UPVC Frames

Do I need to have the UPVC double glazed window frames assessed (condition, weight loadings etc) when replacing the existing Polycarbonate conservatory roof system with a Double Glazed Glass roof system

"Not really as dependant on age of the existing conservatory most are constructed to carry both as the frames should be reinforced and put together using coupling mullions, the roof construction 70% will accommodate a glass replacement instead of polycarbonate but this would be ascertained on initial inspection, as an alternative a ‘Warm Roof’ system could be constructed in and around the existing structure slightly less cost than a glass roof that will be extremely hot in summer and very cold in winter, don’t believe what they tell you that glass conservatory roofs are the answer, they are not, unless you want to star gaze at night or sit in daylight with sunglasses on."

"Yes you do need to check the frames and sills are reinforced by a competantant installer.
And also weight of the new roof would need to be considered before instalation .
A competent installer can do this for you ."

"As long as you have load bearing adjustable jacks below any corner posts then this would be suitable. These are designed to transfer any weight that's carried above directly through your reinforced corner posts into stable ground below."

"Yes, due to spreading of additional weight i would recommend contacting a conservatory specialist jope this helps"

"It would be better to have them assessed. As it is not known how many mullions are in the existing. If you are having thoughts of changing to keep conservatory warm in winter and cool in summer think again it won’t work. It would be better to explore having a complete new fully insulated light weight tile roof."

"It’s best to know that the windows are reinforced.
To see if the windows are made as one or coupled together
Some conservatory installers use corner posts that go through the sill onto the brickwork of the dwarf wall as opposed to just sitting in a hollow sill.
I guess it’s down to the installers competence and how they are looking to not contradict any building regulations that may or may not have been put in place.
We would assess and give our recommendation free of charge.
Thanks
Chris"

"The existing double glazed frames will be sufficient to support a glazed roof. It’s the roof structure itself that may need to be replaced as the original calculations for the roof would take in to account polycarbonate roof panels and not glass.
If the company you are using is replacing the aluminium roof structure, then you will be absolutely fine."

"Hi, so yes, a structural assessment of the existing uPVC window frames and supporting structure is essential when replacing a lightweight polycarbonate conservatory roof with a heavy double-glazed glass system. Glass roofs impose a significantly higher weight load that the original uPVC framework may not have been designed to bear, potentially leading to structural failure or excessive stress on the frames and foundations. A competent installer or structural engineer must confirm the existing frames are adequately reinforced and structurally sound enough to safely carry the increased weight, ensuring compliance with Building Regulations."
