Clearing up building mess

Who's responsible for cleaning up the mess after building work is completed? My builder has left a mess and says it's not his job to clear it. Is this true?

"Every trades person has their own view in this, but I’ve always tidy up afterwards, I believe if they leave mess then it shows poor workmanship as it’s cutting corners"

"I have been a builder for 50 years now and we have always left jobs in a tidy state. In my opinion, if the mess is caused by work completed then it should be cleared away by the trade."

"It depends really. Usually major works and Labour and materials contract are the builder responsibility to get rid of the mess."

"Hello Kelly. I always clean up my mess and take away,or have a skip on site. Definitely down to the Builder unless the customer says otherwise. Gary

"Definitely not true. When I price a job I always include waste removal. He's definitely not professional.
I'd be offering extra or seeking certified rubbish clearance."
