In terms of off-grid drainage systems, which is easier to maintain - a septic tank or sewage treatment plant?
We've got puddles forming on clay soil or garden in our new. What's an appropriate drainage solution? As the external floor was very high and leading to bridging or damp course we've removed it and dug down around 8-10 inches in that area. We've got through some concrete and type one and now found clay which the water sits on. Should I dig further into the clay or just lay something drainable on top? We've removed the concrete along the rest of the side return but not yet dug the type one away there. We have a manhole at the back of our garden which we could potentially channel water towards. Should we remove dig the whole of the side return to the same level? Currently, at least there is plenty of depth below the rear wall meaning it won't bridge the damp course but as it's now the lowest point in the garden I'm concerned that water in the rest of the garden may drain towards that area and cause problems.

Roughly how much does it cost to create a soakaway for surface water, including any necessary work to change the existing drainage from channelling it into the main drain?
If there’s an outdoor drain blockage, who would be responsible for this?
Does a drain or a soakaway tend to be better at getting rid of rainwater? We've had increasingly heavy rain showers and I'm wondering what we can do to future-proof our home.
How can I improve the aesthetics of my concrete gutters? Should I paint them? What else could I do?
I moved into a Grade II listed rental in March and soon noticed an odour on the staircase/landing near the bathroom, like dirty public toilets. The agent and maintenance said they couldn’t smell it, but told me to report back if I found the source. I explained: no blocked or overflowing drains outside, no external drain smell, the odour is isolated to the landing, worse in rain or wind, and not solved by keeping plugs in bath/sink. I also noted I can’t see an external soil/stink pipe, which may be relevant. I’ve tried a HEPA purifier, air fresheners (make it worse), charcoal bags, and odour sprays, with no success. My concern is that sewage gases are escaping into the loft or house. Am I overlooking something, or being dismissed by the agent?

Is it possible to have a drain repaired without the need for excavation and a replacement installation?’
