Can you lay a patio in the rain?

Our tradesman has a window to start the patio next week but the forecast isn't great. Can slabs be laid in wet weather or should we wait for a dry spell?

"Depends on how hard the rain is really. Just have to be careful that the rain doesn’t wash out the sharp sand and cement mix from underneath the slabs"

"I wouldn’t recommend laying discs in the rain as the mortar will become sloppy and not set tight"

"They can be laid in the raid or the dry, wet conditions just make it a little bit slower to cure"

"I wouldn't as it will not set properly so I would wait into you have a better day to lay them but you can dig out if needed"

"Light rain isn’t always a problem, but heavy rain or saturated ground can cause issues with the sub-base and mortar bed, and can affect levels and curing. Most good tradesmen can work around a bit of damp weather, but for laying slabs, a dry spell is preferable if the forecast looks poor.

I’d ask your contractor specifically whether they’re laying on mortar and if the base will stay stable in wet conditions — that’s the key bit."

"It’s difficult, mainly no as the mix gets too watery to be able to lay making it 10x more difficult to get a levelled patio"

"Laying patio slabs properly depends on stable ground and consistent mortar conditions—rain interferes with both.

problems laying slabs in the rain:
Mortar gets too wet → weak bonding, slabs can shift later
Sub-base softens → slabs may sink or become uneven over time
Cement washout → rain can dilute or wash away the cement before it sets
Poor leveling → harder to get slabs flat when everything is slippery

when it might be ok:

Very light drizzle (not steady rain)
You’re using a full mortar bed, not just spot bedding
Ground is already well-compacted and not waterlogged
You can cover the area immediately after laying (tarps, boards, etc.)"

"It’s not recommended as it can affect the mortar mix underneath the paving which will mean it’ll lose it’s strength"
