Can you have a washing machine in a bathroom?

We're planning a utility room but the space we have is technically part of the bathroom. Is there a legal or safety issue with having a washing machine inside a bathroom?

"Yes, a washing machine can be installed in a bathroom. It should be protected by an RCD and at least 600mm away from the edge of a bath or shower. A standard 13A socket shouldn’t be within 3 metres of a bath or shower, so the appliance could be connected with a fused spur or supplied from a socket located outside the bathroom.

Hope this helps."

"The washing machine itself isn't the issue if it is plugged in outside the bathroom then no issue (you may get an issue from condensation) but electrically as long as it isn't plugged in in the bathroom then that's fine"

"Having a washing machine or any 230V class 1 appliance in the bathroom is not advisable due to the potential risk of electrical faults, particularly when individuals are undressed and have wet skin. According to Part P regulations, electrical installations in bathrooms must follow specific zoning rules, and legal sockets cannot be installed closer than 3 meters horizontally from the edge of zone 1. (There is a very specific exception to this rule, but it is not intended for powering any class 1 appliances.)

If your bathroom has sufficient space, a qualified electrician can install a socket specifically for your washing machine.

You might encounter DIY enthusiasts who suggest plugging your washing machine into a socket in the hallway and drilling a hole through the wall for the cable. They will gladly take your money, leaving you with a washing machine that poses a danger to anyone using the bathroom. If you're willing to take that risk, go ahead."
