Do solar panels actually save money on electricity?

our electricity bill has jumped again and I'm wondering if panels would definately save money over time. South facing roof, 3 bed semi. how long until they pay for themselves?

Depend s of what system you are having , they certainly do save you money in the long run , especially if you have a battery storage system ,

Definitely I got some installed on my house. Winter time I don't know how I would manage the bill otherwise. Summer time I am not paying for electricity. And the government pays for exported power. 
It also VERY dependent on how many panels are you going to have and how much will be used during the day. ALWAYS better to use it or store it than exporting it. 
Charging cars, heating the water(if you have a hot water cylinder),and storing are things you can do during the day to save from exporting, I also like to use a slow cooker, just turn it on around ten AM and leave it all day.

They certainly do, the payback period depends on a lot of factors. 
We have panels, and a house battery, combined they save us money.. we also have an EV, and by careful use of the tariffs available of EV charging and export, the savings can be quite high. It’s always different to make comparisons as everyone’s usage is different but I can tell you over a 12 month period my average price per unit of electricity is below 12p vs a typical standard tariff of 24p.

Of course you get smaller bill in winter and summer it's all bill will covered, all depends on the number of panels and the brand of them, in 4 years you get your money back, don't forget about government founds availablee founds for low-income people.

Yes they do, and a south facing roof is a great starting point. Re paying for themselves, I have seen calculations that range from three years up to twenty-five years. Factors that affect it include: electricity usage, number of panels that will physically fit on your roof and number of batteries you want to install (ie enough to get you through the periods when the panels are not generating, ie at night). A quick analysis of your house can be done with an address to give you a more accurate set of numbers and a visit in person would enable a proper survey.

Exact payback terms will depend on the system, size, install cost etc. All installers need to be registered with MCS who set clear precident as to the quotation phase of things which includes payback projections, so for an accurate timeframe speak to an installer for a quote. However, as a ballpark expect somewhere in the region of 6-9 years.
