Artex Ceiling Removal

Looking to have an Artex ceiling in a room that is 9m squared either removed or work done to remove the textured effect. I am unaware if it contains asbestos at this stage. Is it possible to plaster over Artex ceiling to achieve a smooth finish or must it be removed?

"I normally plaster over artex without any problems. Another option is to plasterboard over the artex and then plaster."

"You should get away with filling it out with a kylite bonding then skim over the bonding to stop any artex from showing then your not disturbing the artex"

"Hi, it is possible to skim over an Artex ceiling to achieve a smooth flat, modern ceiling, I have done this many times, it's not easy but possible obviously if you know what you are doing."

"Hi there

Would need to know age of house and then we can determine regarding asbestos
But if the ceiling texture is quite flat
Then you can
1. Overboard with brand new plasterboard and skimming finish
2. If it flat enough go over with thicker plaster and bonding and screw up the old boards more to make sure no sagging occurs due to extra weight

Hope this helps"

"The best option would be to give it 2 coats of PVA and then 2 coats of plaster job done."

"You can skim over it if it is only stipple effect but if not it can be overbarded with 9mm plasterboard and skimmed"

"I wouldn't use PVA, I would apply blue grit and 2 coats for a definite bond."

"You can overboard the ceiling with 9.5 mm plasterboard and tape and fill the joints that would work out cheaper than plastering if you use foil backboard it will also make the room warmer in the winter."
