How to attach kitchen units to the wall?

Hello, I need to attach wall units to a wall in my kitchen. I keep drilling the holes for the plugs but they won't stay in and when I try to attach the unit they're coming out and bringing bits of the wall with them. There never has been and doesn’t seem to be any issues with damp and i think it is a brick wall as its backs onto my neighbour. How far should I be drilling into the wall? Are there any alternative options for me? Thanks in advance.

I have lead flashing around the sides of my Chimney, from what I can see the flashing has fallen out of place apart from the very top section, which is the only thing holding it in place. Can I get it refitted without buying new lead?
