What is  'pollarding' or 'topping' and why is it bad for Trees?

'Pollarding' or 'Topping' is a type of pruning that involves the removal of whole tree tops or large branches, leaving behind only stubs or small lateral branches.

This is poor practice and usually creates large wounds, which often allow decay to invade the tree. New branches are often weak and break off after a few years.

This type of pruning can cause a lot of damage to a tree that can shorten its life and create a safety hazard.

Why would you want to 'top' your tree?
... It looks unattractive, leaving the tree with a stunted appearance.

I would probably recommend once a year, but it depends on the tree, the best solution is just to keep an eye on the tree and when you think the tree is starting to shoot out of your preference then have it cut
